With significant and increasing cost pressures on both the NHS and welfare state, and no solution in sight to the social care question, it is no surprise that attention has shifted to preventing ill-health at source to support a healthier society. In 2018, the Department of Health and Social Care published the green paper, ‘Prevention is better than cure’. Rather than solely focused on treating people when they are ill, or stepping into provide rehab when someone is already out of work due to illness, the aim is to intervene earlier to stop problems from arising in the first place and empower individuals to take control of their own health. This signals an increased focus on keeping people healthy and supporting them to manage their health earlier and more effectively, whether by harnessing new innovations in diagnostics such as genomic medicine or improving early intervention and access to healthcare via the workplace.

Although not new to insurance, insurers are increasingly looking to support the health of their policy holders to reduce the risk of illness or injury and minimise the chance of a claim. It is in the interests of the individual, employers, the state and insurers if the latter can provide support to avoid the need for a claim. But is there really a fundamental shift underway or is this just hype? If it is a reality, how quickly and how far can a shift go to really make a difference in improving the health of the nation?

This event will explore the opportunities and the challenges, looking at the developments of today and the possibilities of tomorrow.
